The Skinny on Laughter Yoga

It doesn't get any better. No fancy movements. All can practice. Don't need to be happy. No joke. No special equipment or clothing required. Free.

Powerful Tune-Up

Laughter Yoga does not depend on the mind, although by practicing it, we can "trick" our minds into helping us feel better. We simulate laughter to stimulate feelings of happiness, well-being, peace, confidence...

Even though our brains can't tell the difference between "fake" and "real" laughter, we can! Not to worry - in time, the awkwardness of fake laughter becomes genuine and flows out of us like a fountain. When this happens, we begin to hear and feel our "original laugh". Consquently, we more easily reconnect with the originality of us ~ our true selves ~ and begin to live more authentically. You'll laugh more throughout the day, if nothing else.

"The laughing really is working for me, and I feel a real connection developing to the work. I found myself laughing today at the simplest and most joyful things. You've opened up an area of my life that I did not know was missing." -- Jon Graznak, Charlottesville Laughter Club Member

A Practice of Self-Lovingkindness

“Laughter Yoga was a real ice breaker for me. I've learned you can always turn a negative into a positive. No matter what somebody gives you, you can always stay positive and not be derailed or discouraged."
--Tempest Beldsoe, VH1 Celebrity Fit Club Participant

Laughter Yoga is physically-oriented technique that uses a gentle combination of playful, empowering and otherwise "tension-releasing" simple laughter exercises, sprinkled with reflexology, breathing and stretching exercises, basic unison chanting, and rhythmic clapping.

In Laughter Yoga, we use laughter as a tool, not an emotion(although it gets really funny). This is done to improve our health, increase well-being, and promote peace through personal transformation.

YogaLaughs classes and celebrations are usually 1.5 hours. Corporate seminars are usually 2 hours.

Cultivated with Care

Dr. Madan Kataria is the most recently recognized person to establish the unique method of Laughter Yoga. He teaches people to make use of the fact that most anyone can laugh for 15-20 minutes without depending on a sense of humor or comedy.

No joke: There are over 5000 laughter clubs worldwide - Laughter Yoga is practiced in 53 countries with 250,000 members. We're just now finding our ability in Charlottesville how to disregard our fabulous (he he) senses of humor and laugh at the same time.

We Need to breathe

Laughter Yoga works out our abs, our diaphrams and, most importantly of course, our lungs. "Deep beathing techniques which increase oxygen to the cell are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life... Remember. Where cells get enough oxygen, cancerwill not, cannot occur." -- Dr. Otto Warburg, President, Institute of Cell Physiology, Nobel Prize Winner.
